In 1896, elephants at the New Dehli Zoo were observed practicing rudimentary yoga poses within their enclosures. Their astounded keepers encouraged this remarkable behavior and before long the pachyderms were demonstrating up to seven distinct postures. At the turn of the century several of these elephants were shipped on loan to zoos in the West. Zoo animals throughout the U.S. and Europe quickly noted and mimicked the elephants behavior and the rest, as they say, is history. Today nearly every animal in the zoo is a yoga enthusiast!
