Doppelganger felt like talking to a 13-year-old girl with ADHD. I realize that the character Citrus is meant to be much older than 13, but she had the mentality of a 13-year-old.

I have mixed feelings about this novel, because the first half of the novel; I am not a fan of, but it becomes pretty interesting after that. I'd probably read the second book just to find out what happens and why it is all happening, let alone my interest in the characters.

The novel starts with our avid reader, Citrus, who is never late for school but just this one time, is. The moment she gets to school things get weird; first the lady in the office erases her as attending when she comes in for a late pass. Then she finds herself in second our taking the test, she'd been so worried about. Then her crush Aedan is beside her, with the same dilemma. He's in there taking a test too. From there the events get weirder and weirder.

One of the main things that annoyed me in this novel was Citrus and her inability to let things sink in for the first half of the novel. Then we find her fickle heart and the constant change of status on her feelings for Aedan. At the beginning she's like I have like a half crush on him, then she claims she's had a full blown crush on him forever, then she drops the hammer and say's "I'm in love." It's been a few hours since the whole thing started.

For me she is redeemed in the end, because she stops wondering about how the doppelganger is doing on her tests and projects, and starts wondering if her friends and family are dead. She becomes realistic and slightly likeable in the end.

I believe that the author set up everything perfectly for this novel, in tone and setting anyway. Right off she lets you know it's a YA novel with some comical and some serious parts.

The best part of this novel was the twist towards the end that I did not see coming, and yet I should have. It makes me feel stupid for not noticing before. I also like how it complicates the entire storyline; seriously at the end there are so many unsolved dilemmas, that it frustrates me. Even now I'm sitting here like, "Why??"

There's a bad habit in this novel of focusing on things that have no importance to the storyline, or getting sidetracked in the characters thoughts about something totally irrelevant. The irrelevant thoughts could attest to the characters personality and how she is constantly side tracked by her battles in this novel. However they were annoying to read.

Can I just say, if your name is Citrus I would call you Orange too. Your parents are practically begging me to do it, so I think the nickname is well deserved.

An interesting novel with ups and downs, overall.

Sixteen year-old Citrus Leahy is a total bookworm, wrapped up in reading 'The Hunger Games'. In fact, she's so absorbed in reading that shestays up late, oversleeps, and misses the bus to school, which means that she has to bike there instead.

Which means she's going to be really, incredibly late for class. Citrus shows up at the front office tired and anxious to make it to history test on time, but when she gets her hall pass to history, she sees herself in the classroom, already scratching down answers.

Aedan, one of her classmates, is also standing outside the door, watching his doppelganger take his test. Aedan and Citrus are off on a life and death investigation, trying to discover who those doppelgangers really are -- and why they want to take over their lives.

What I liked about this book
At first, I was a bit thrown off by the use of run on sentences. The grammar Nazi in me wanted to pull out a red pen and shriek. Once I let go of that first instinct, I really enjoyed the voice Harris created for Citrus Leahy. The run-on sentences are as much a part of Citrus as the crossed out sentences are a part of Juliette in 'Shatter Me'. The run on sentences capture Citrus' particular brand of neurotic, and I could almost hear here hyperventilating when she got anxious in the story.

When she's not on the verge of an anxiety attack, Citrus is a remarkably resourceful heroine. She has enough quirk and charm to be grounded, and enough spunk and determination to keep me rooting for her the whole way through.

Since I'm a sucker for supernatural/paranormal stories, I enjoyed the idea of Doppelgangers. It treads on some familiar ground (Harris even explicitly references 'The Faculty' and 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers' in the story), but does so in a fresh and appealing way.

What I didn't like about this book

Let's just say the ending is 'unresolved'. I found myself screaming 'Nononononono!' when I reached the end of the book. If you're the type of reader who likes closure, you might want to wait for the next installment to come out before diving into this book. Harris definitely left me wanting more answers.

The nature of the Doppelgangers isn't fully understood at the end of this book. Are they aliens? Monsters? Human experimentations? Who knows? The little that Citrus does learn about the Doppelgangers doesn't give readers much to go on.

Final verdict
If you're looking for a quick paranormal YA read, check this one out. It's full of twists and turns, and Harris has created a loveable heroine. I'll be checking out the sequel.
