"Eventually, even the smallest mistruth would catch up to a man, a tangled web of thorns that would leave him cut and bleeding."
Wow, this book was an emotional roller coaster of epic proportions. It's been a while since I have read a paranormal romance and I don't know the reason why! They are so incredible and wild!
Especially this one.
The fact that a character in the book declared the love between both main characters as a Beauty and the Beast romance didn't hurt either! Beauty and the Beast is my weakness and I love anything that relates to it.
Solo is a man who believes he doesn't deserve to be loved considering his dark past. Vika is a woman who has only known "love" to be attached with physical harm. They are both forced to meet in unexpected and more than cruel conditions. They are imprisoned by horrible people who dictate their physical and emotional state every day. Both have to figure out if the price for freedom is too high to pay or worth every moment of pain.
This story is brutal and complex. Hilarious and intense. As soon as I thought the story was about to get better, Gena would take it all away and break my heart. There's so much loss and betrayal, I have no idea how Solo and Vika can be as sane as they are. One is willing to be the best they can even after being surrounded by such hatred and the other has learned to tune it all out, not bothering to lift a finger to change the outcome.
It's safe to say the relationship that unfolds between the two is nothing short of a struggle.
Gena knows how to create the most beautiful, perfectly imperfect of characters. I loved witnessing the character developments of every character in this book, both good and bad. In the end, almost everybody got what they deserved, and more. I am so glad I own the second book or else I would be going crazy with waiting!

Last Kiss Goodnight An Otherworld Assassin Novel Gena Showalter 9781451671599 Books Reviews

What the hell happened...!? I'm not even sure Gena Showalter wrote this book! That is the only reason that I am giving it 3 stars. It really should only get 2 stars, but I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt.

Where was the snappy Showalter dialogue?
The sex scenes were written for the virginal faint of heart.
What was with the bible thumping & religious soapbox? I really felt preached to. Not something I like in my paranormal romance reading. Religious Soapbox Preaching + Paranormal Romance = Bad Reading!

I really wanted to like the main characters, but I just couldn't. For the circumstances the characters were molded by and were thrown into they felt shallow and 2 dimensional.
I felt the same way about the book in general. I wanted to like this book, but it was just too hard.
"Last Kiss Goodnight" by Gena Showalter. This is the story of Vika and Solo - beauty and the beast. Solo is a "monster"- an "otherworlder" that is sold to a circus. Vika is the abused daughter of the circus' owner. They form an unlikely bond and friendship and love develops. Despite being a "monster", Solo is a good man. Vika is not as timid as everyone believes - she has strong beliefs and works only to do good. I did find keeping track of the other "otherworlders" a bit confusing, but didn't find that it affected the story.
"Last Kiss Goodnight" is a fantasy story - it delves into other worlds and beings. This has become one of my favorites and I've read it a couple of times already. I look forward to reading the next book in The Otherworld Assassin series, "Black and Blue" by Gena Showalter.
My Review
Honestly, I don't even know where to start this review or even how to rate this book overall. This book was so completely different from what I'm used to with Gena's writing....and not necessarily in a bad way. It just truly wasn't what I was expecting. Honestly, I think that this book would be better marketed as a mainstream fiction book rather than a romance, although the romance is big in it. The book just seemed bigger than the romance overall. It reminded me a ton of Erin Morgensterns' THE NIGHT CIRCUS.

The book takes place almost entirely within the cages of the circus. I kept expecting it to be something more and have Solo escape with Vika and mount a rescue for either the rest of the circus or his teammates, John, Blue, and Michael. That never happened and I was disappointed with that. I felt like the circus scenes just went on for too long without anything changing and the story didn't move forward.

Okay, since I have no idea what to do with this review, I am stealing Felicia, The Geeky Book Bloggger's format
Audio Rating 4.50
Overall Rating 3.00
Story Rating 2.50
Character Rating 4.00

What I liked
**I liked the set-up of Solo's team and the beginning of the book with the explosion. I'm dying to know what happened to the rest of the team.
**I also liked the insight into Vika's past with her animals that used to be part of the circus. Without that back-story, I think it would have been a LOT harder to like her character and empathize with what she's going through.
**The whole set-up of the circus was really creative. Gena did a good job with the establishment of the cuffs and drugs so that you knew there wasn't hope for escape for these beings in the menagerie.
**the narrator on this was amazing. He did a fabulous job with the inflections and emotions of the characters...always! For me, he made this book.

What I didn't like
**I felt like the "captured" part of the story went on for too long.
**The bible verses at the start of each chapter seemed like a really bizarre choice to me.
**There wasn't enough depth to the relationship between Vika and Solo. He felt connected to her and her to him, but for some reason, that just never connected emotionally to me as the reader.
**X and Dr. E.....I could have done without. They just didn't seem to fit the story.
**the switching of the deafness.... also, just didn't seem to fit to me.

Conclusions
I understand Blue's book is next and honestly, that was the best part of the story to me...this team that was ripped apart. I am dying of curiosity about what happened to everyone else and that will definitely keep me reading the series.
