The Edge of Normal A Novel Reeve LeClaire Series Carla Norton Books

Reeve is a kidnap survivor. She also survived being raped and tortured for 4 years, from the age of 12 to 16, before she was rescued. Several years have passed and she is still trying to put her life together.

A short trip away, three young girls are missing. One is found and located ... she , too, has been raped and tortured for over a year. Reeve's psychiatrist has been called in to talk to the family and victim as he is the foremost expert in these kinds of situations. This time, he is asking Reeve to come with him .... as sort of mentor to the young girl. He feels the experience will help both of them.

Reeve gets heavily involved in finding the two still missing girls...and he might be a lot closer to her than she thinks.

The book was good, at times exceptional. I really liked Reeve. She's a young woman still trying to find who she is and I enjoyed watching her grow stronger. The only criticism I have is with the ending. The storyline builds to an explosive situation .. and then it just kind of stops. It was a bit abrupt and I was left wanting something a little more.

This is first in a series and I will not hesitate to read the next one WHAT DOESN'T KILL HER.

The Edge of Normal A Novel Reeve LeClaire Series Carla Norton Books Reviews

This is not what I typically read, but it was chosen by someone other than me as our book group read. I feel it is very well written, a difficult subject, but well presented. I think the main female character in this book was easy to identify with (even though I haven't been through what she has been through), giving way to a powerful engagement in the story. I would read this author again as I was captivated by the story. I rated four stars instead of five for subject matter, but I clearly enjoyed the read!
I enjoyed it, and would recommend it to anyone that enjoys a good murder mystery (but isn't bothered by the descriptive damage inflicted on victims of sadistic power rapists). There's no delicate way to put that, but if you have the stomach and morbid curiosity for it, this book is your oyster.
Don't let the "ripped from today's headlines" topic keep you from reading this book. This is a story of girls who have been kidnapped and held captive for months or years at a time. While somewhat graphic, it is not your normal shock value, accident you can't help but stare at, book. The psychology of the girls who were fortunate enough to be rescued is fascinating. How they relate to their friends and families and their jobs, if they can keep them. The sisterhood that forms between the survivors and how many years it takes to make even the smallest progress, like showing any emotion or affect about anything. Very good read.
This book is an absolute page turner. It is filled with suspense and sometimes difficult subject matter, but it is a must read! You will find it difficult to put down. It captures you from the first page until the very last one. I just had to read this book since I had received a copy of the second book to review prior to its release later this year. This book is extremely well written, with incredible character development. This is an absolute must read for all who love drama, mystery and suspense! Absolutely amazing book! I applaud the author for tackling a difficult subject and turning it into a book well worth reading. I highly recommend this book!!!
I loved this story. I love how Carla Norton writes. At times, I like when an author doesn't go into minute detail about something rather, portrays the moment or action in just a few words while still getting the important message across. I think having a former victim interact with a new one is a very wise idea - the former will never ever lose the horror, but if she's moved on to the point of being able to identify with and help the new victim, there is nothing like sharing the experience. There are truly situations in life that cannot possibly be fully understood except by someone else who has experienced the same thing. The initial interactions between Reeve and Tilly are riveting, poignantly portrayed. I'm wondering What happened to Daryl Wayne Flint? I am hoping Carla Norton does not stop at this debut novel, but gives us more.
I read a lot. There's nothing better than being transported by a book into a different reality and having exciting vicarious experiences from the comfort of my recliner. There are a lot of good books but few that bring the perfect mixture of good writing, exciting plot, smart dialogue (that doesn't make you cringe in embarrassment for the writer), likeable characters, a heroic protagonist and the promise of more of the same to come. The Edge of Normal is an exceptional book that contains all these elements and I look forward to reading more wonderfully written books by Carla Norton, and to sharing more experiences with Reeve LeClaire.
Carla Norton has written an intensely compelling suspense thriller about extraordinary people impacted by the crimes of kidnapping, captivity, and torture. Her villain is despicable. Reeve, a victim who was freed ten years earlier, is still working through the trauma of her ordeal. The focus, and the amazing thrill of this story, is that Reeve is strong. Her perceptions, her heightened awareness of danger, her first steps to recovering empathy and connection with other persons, are recounted beautifully, and become the centerpiece for her new challenge. As a mentor to Tilly, another returned captive, Reeve learns about herself, about legal and policy protocol, about human behavior. She is able to utilize her own razor-sharp instincts to help in addressing Tilly's struggles, and beyond that, to respond to a larger problem. The psychiatrist, Dr. Lerner, encourages her in this growth, and Reeve gradually takes back the reins, making choices both brave and compassionate. I truly devoured this superb page-turner, with twists and turns which leave the reader reeling.
