4.5 stars. Really great NA read, I loved both Brinley and Ryder, two people who knew each other in high school and kissed based on a dare, leaving Brinley humiliated afterwards while Ryder was still the most popular guy. Brinkley avoided Ryder like the plague from then on, but they cross paths again in college. Ryder never forgot about Brinley or that kiss. Brinley is the shy and innocent girl who focuses on excelling in school because she doesn't want to follow in her mom's footsteps. Ryder is not only sexy, but he's a bit of a bad boy, with a lip ring, too, but he's also very smart and intuitive. I was amused by their dynamic because neither of them could avoid the other no matter how hard they tried and Ryder really made earnest attempts to not cross a line with Brinley. They were both warring within themselves of not only their feelings and actions, but the general conflict that this could turn into something more and maybe neither of them could handle that with the other person. Brinley is a commitment type of girl who can't imagine that Ryder would be seriously interested in her and Ryder is the guy that doesn't do girlfriends but might break his rules for her. Some of that might seem like a typical college storyline, but there is more to it involving their social circle and their families, which puts them in a position to really question themselves and their motives and what they actually want out of life. A lot of the characters are not what they seem as relationships are put to the test and it was interesting to see who supported who in the end. Brinley had some insecurities, but I never found it to be excessive or that her sweetness was annoying in any way, she was just the right balance, not ever leading anyone on. Ryder was both transparent and enigmatic, but he was always a good guy no matter what he claimed. There's some drama, of course, but it wasn't over done and in the end, I was pleasantly surprised by how much the characters develop and progress.Tags : Just a Little Crush - Kindle edition by Renita Pizzitola. Received a copy of this book through netgalley! YAY!
4.5 stars -- Yup, that was a whole lotta butterfly tummy goodness. GREAT chemistry between Brinley and Ryder....seriously, just tingles. And you know what I really loved about this book? It had a lot of similar themes or scenes that I've read in other books and generally was meh on, but Ms. Pizzitola actually got them all right. Like her relationship with her BFF Mason, and his inevitable ...wait, I can't explain that part b/c it will spoil it. But the resolution to how that part played out was actually pretty satisfying and realistic. And how she dealt with him, some tough love, but still love was good too. It just showed how strong Brinley could be in some situations. She wasn't always strong, but she *tried* to be, and I appreciate that. I don't mind flawed heroines, but I like it when they have some characteristics that make you root for them and cheer them when they try to do things the *right* way. Another part that Ms. Pizzitola got right? Ryder's bad boy transformation. B/C it wasn't a transformation. I could actually believe who he appeared to be in public, what was going on in his head, and how he could be different with Brinley. It wasn't out of character. I seriously appreciated that. And you top it off with Brinley's roommate Fallon, who looked liked she was going to be this stereotype with no depth, and then NOPE! The author actually makes her interesting and likeable and a fun compliment to Brinley.
So yeah, being a reader who loves good well developed *likeable* characters, this book was fabulous for me.
loved the story of Ryder and Brinley. They knew each other since they were 15 and a game of spin the bottle left them kissing in the bathroom. Although embarrassment left her running out and the other kids laughing Ryder never forgot the kiss. They didn't hang in the same circles so never really talked again. Meeting again in college drew them back together when Ryders roommate had an interest in her. Knowing his interest wasn't genuine Ryder tried to protect her and fell for her. They begin dating, he being somewhat of a player and she being a virgin, he doesn't want to move to fast. A campus scandal is to hit the paper and she is devastated feeling Ryder used her in a sick game. They break up however once the truth all comes out she is able to place the blame in the right place and they are able to work things out. This is a really sweet story of first love, he was her first kiss and her first love. I highly recommend!
There's a game afoot and Brinley Dawson just might get played. The question is...who is the player and who is the savior? These stupid college boys and their games! To have made it to college they sure don't appear to be using their heads...not the big one anyway. Ryder was in high school the last time he played with Brinley, a little game called Seven Minutes in Heaven. Ryder never forgot it. Neither did Brinley but for different, less enjoyable reasons. They are together again but will Brinley's crush end up crushing her?
Oh, I hope not. I really loved Ryder. He seemed to have a good side if you could see it through the player persona he wore. He just needed someone to bring it out. Enter sweet, innocent Brinley. She still has feelings for him even after that unfortunate incident in high school. Of course, her best friend, Mason, doesn't trust him and Mason is ever protective of his Brinley. Adorable even. Mason and Brinley's friendship was so sweet and genuine and her romance with Ryder contained just the kind of angst you would expect out of 19 and 20 year olds...but not too much. The side characters and stories explained why each of them were the way they were and was delivered with feeling especially the relationship between Brinley and her mother.
I loved "Just a Little Crush" It was everything I look forward to in a New Adult, college romance story.
